The department of head and neck radiation is one of the key clinical departments of Cancer hospital of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Zhejiang Cancer Hospital). The current chief is Professor Xiao-Zhong Chen, who is the vice chairman of the Committee of Nasopharyngeal Cancer of Chinese Anti-Cancer Association and chairmen of the Committee of Nasopharyngeal Cancer of Zhejiang Province' Anti-Cancer Association. There are 22 clinicians, including 13 senior specialists. Currently, there are 142 inpatient beds in our department.
In the head and neck radiation department, our duty is to deliver the highest possible clinical care for patients with cancer of the head and neck. Using an interdisciplinary approach, experts from across disciplines come together in the head and neck center to provide state-of-the-art care for patients with all types and stages of head and neck cancer.
Our team of specialists treats patients with tumors of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx, larynx, central nervous system, paranasal sinus, oral cavity, salivary glands, as well as second malignancy of cervical lymph node with occult primary foci and mucosal melanoma.
In 2019, the head and neck radiation department has attended about 3000 in-patients Of which more than a third were newly diagnosed nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In the department, a highly qualified staff with special expertise in head and neck radiation, chemotherapy, molecular targeted therapy and immunotherapy offers patients with these tumors the latest and most effective treatment options.
Head and neck radiation department comprises three subsections, which provide focused centers of excellence for the treatment of patients and development of research:
1. 2. Section of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Head and Neck Radiation
3. Section of the Central Nervous System Tumor Radiation
We have conducted many prospective randomized controlled clinical trials focused on recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma, glioma and squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck. We have undertaken many national research projects successively. Over 80 scientific papers had been published, including 60 SCI papers. Professors from our department had edited 6 books. The experts in this department participated in developing several expert consensuses on the diagnosis of recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the treatment of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the treatment of metastasis nasopharyngeal carcinoma, radiation therapy for gliomas, nutrition support therapy for head and neck cancer patients receiving radiotherapy.
